When we were deciding on a mobile chipset solution, there were many options to
enable 802.11b or Bluetooth wireless
connectivity on a range of mobile products. However, we decided to opt for a more cost-effective solution that is aimed at the cabling industry. The cabling industry suffers from a very unglamorous image, but it is one of the mainstays of Asian IT manufacturing. What Prolific has delivered is a chip that bridges the USB port of the PC to a serial port interface. With Prolific's USB to serial adapters, uses can enjoy the convenience of a USB port. This single chip is designed for connection to cellular phones, digital cameras, modems or ISDN terminal adapters with a data transfer rate of more than 1.2Mbps.
The PL-2303 USB-to-serial bridge controller is a low-cost and high-performance single chip solution. It provides a simple and easy way to afford a bridge or connectivity between the universal serial bus (USB) and serial port interface.
With the advantages of the USB port, such as plug and play and hot swap features, users have the capability to utilize peripherals with a serial port interface in an easy-to-use environment. The PL-2303 device and software driver are able to make the USB interface transparent to peripherals without firmware changes. It is possible for serial port peripherals to easily interface with the USB port with minimum modifications.
The chip is fully compliant with USB specification version 1.1(0) and USB CDC version 1.1. It supports the RS232 serial interface, and automatic handshake mode. It delivers a data transfer rate of over 1Mbps. It features a 96-byte buffer for each upstream and downstream data flow. The PL-2303 supports remote wake-up and power management, and a default ROM or external EEPROM for device configuration. With an on-chip USB transceiver, crystal oscillator running at 12MHz, the PL-2303 is a single chip solution in a 28-pin SOIC package.
