How many of us have audio CDs that jump, or skip certain tracks? And do you have any data disks that have corrupted files? Or DVDs that have distorted image files? In most cases we just throw these disks away and bemoan the fact that we didn't store them more carefully.

Now you can save those disks and retrieve all the information thanks to Dr. Fix-It from Lucky Star Enterprise. This very simple device resembles a portable CD player, but it is in fact a repair and cleaning kit for optical disks.

During a demonstration of how the device works, a normal karaoke CD was played by William Yeh. It was working perfectly, but then Yeh took some sandpaper and scratched the disk deliberately. He placed it back in the player and the disk was damaged. Not only did the picture jump, the sound track was also damaged and crackly. Yeh placed the damaged disk in Dr. Fix-It and after the application of repair paste and a few minutes' operation, he retrieved the disk and it was playing perfectly again.

Yeh then went on to demonstrate the cleaning abilities of the device. He rubbed oil on a disk and then stamped on it with his foot, leaving a filthy footprint in the grease. The disk did not play properly again, but after a few moments in the Dr. Fix-It device with cleaning paste this time, it was restored to full playback condition.

Apparently Lucky Star Enterprise was asked by the local Blockbusters to repair its faulty disks. Dr. Fix-It was successful in 98 percent of cases. The two percent that could not be repaired had apparently been damaged down to the printing layer, or were not burned properly. Dr. Fix-It cannot repair damage in these two cases.

In addition to being a useful end-user device, Lucky Star Enterprise is able to produce an industrial version for larger corporations to use for professional cleaning purposes. It could also be used commercially, with disk-cleaning stations set up in stores or supermarkets.

We selected Dr. Fix-It as a winner in the Best of Taiwan's Best awards not only because it is a clever, low-cost solution to damaged disk headaches, it is also a versatile solution that cleans and repairs all optical disks, including game disks, CDs, VCDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and data and software CDs. Its operation is just two minutes per cycle and it boasts a simple one-button operation.

Lucky Star is a large family operation that has many ventures in Taiwan and China. The six brothers of the Yeh family (William is the son of Thomas, president of Lucky Star Enterprise) opened the company 34 years ago as a trading company. Now the group has expanded into manufacturing, restaurants, mining, shopping malls, and education. The group's core business remains trading and manufacturing.
