Broadband networking has become a given for anyone working in a modern business. With the increase in media-rich content and streaming video applications, users are demanding broadband as standard. Taiwanese manufacturers have been instrumental in providing the tools required for accessing the world of broadband networking, and none more so than Amigo Technology Ltd. The company's latest ADSL router impressed us with its feature-rich nature and low cost. Concentrated in the one deceptively compact unit is a full range of networking and communications standards, making the AMX-CA64E an excellent choice for any broadband networking environment. The AMX-CA64E, is a four-port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch with a full-rate ADSL router using Conexant's chipset solution. It comes with a complete set of industry standard features for high-speed access to the Internet.

The AMX-CA64E supports ANSI T1.413 issue 2, ITU-T G.992.1 (G.DMT) and ITU-T G.992.2 (G.Lite) annex A standards. It delivers up to 8Mbps downstream data rates and 1Mbps upstream data rates. Its four-port ethernet switch interface (10/100Mbps) is compliant with IEEE 802.3X standards and universal serial bus specification revision 1.1. It supports a direct bridging function (10/100Mbps to LAN), and a driver and communication software suite is provided. In data mode the AMX-CA64E supports G.992.1 (G.DMT) up to 8Mbps downstream data rates and 1Mbps upstream data rates, and also supports G.992.2 (G.Lite) up to 1.5Mbps downstream data rates and 512Kbps upstream data rates. In WAN mode, the device supports PPP over ATM (RFC2364) and PPP over ethernet (RFC 2516). In LAN mode it supports routed/bridge ethernet over ATM (RFC 1483). It also supports classical Internet protocol over ATM (RFC 1577) and ATM SAR, ATM AAL5, ATM Forum UNI3.1/4.0 PVC and support up to eight PVCs.

The four-port 10/100Mbps switch interface is compliant with IEEE 802.3X standards. In bridge mode the device supports ethernet to ADSL self-learning transparent bridging (IEEE 802.1D), and up to 16 MAC learning addresses. In router mode it supports IP routing (RIPv2), static routing, DHCP server/client, NAT and ICMP.

Security features include user authentication for PPP, PAP, CHAP and password protected system management. The AMX-CA64E is USB 1.1 compliant and supports Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, and XP (for the USB interface). The device comes with a 9V/1A AC adapter.
