The number of information appliance solutions available at this year's Computex Taipei was greatly increased on last year. When making our decision in the information appliance category this year we looked particularly at rugged models that can withstand the wear and tear of working out in the field. Advantech's first ruggedized Web tablet, the MobiPanel 100, is a portable wireless Windows CE-based appliance combining data capture and communication technology.
The MobiPanel MPC-100 is designed to provide mobile professionals a real-time wireless solution to access information from remote databases via the Internet or an intranet. The MobiPanel MPC-100 is ideal for applications in retail, healthcare, warehousing, home networking, manufacturing process monitoring, hospitality, logistics support and on-site service.
The MobiPanel is spill and dust resistant in compliance with IP 53 specifications. Its 10.4-inch high brightness TFT LCD display is touch-enabled and can be viewed in both landscape and portrait modes. A sturdy device, the MobiPanel can survive a three-foot drop onto a concrete floor.
Another deciding factor in our choice of the MobiPanel was its wireless connectivity. Some manufacturers have experienced problems with the integration of wireless technology on Web appliances, but Advantech's 802.11b-based solution with antenna built into the body of the device was fully workable during the show. It supports all major networks at high-speed and unbroken communication without electromagnetic interference.
To maximize its connectivity with peripherals like barcode scanners, printers, digital cameras, keyboards/mice, projectors and monitors, the MobiPanel 100 is fully equipped with infrared, USB, PS/2, VGA interface ports and RS-485, RS-422, and RS-232 protocol com ports.
The MobiPanel is also a low-power consumption solution that saves on power and gives many more hours of computing without the need for frequent recharging. Equipped with Intel's StrongArm processor, the MobiPanel 100 perfectly performs Windows CE 3.0 based applications with minimum power consumption. Its superior powering system ensures that its lithium-ion battery lasts for more than six hours.
The MobiPanel 100 is a compact device that can still deliver enhanced functionality. Encased in a small and solid space measuring 295 x 235 x 28mm and weighing in at only 1.3kg, it comes in a magnesium housing, which assures superior resistance to exterior impacts like bumps, drops and knocks. It has been constructed for professionals working in harsh environments. Its magnesium housing and internal shock-absorption design meets industrial durability requirements.
